WILL ROGERS COURTS (visitors invited), 1620 Heyman St., an
extensive housing project for low-income tenants covering 37 acres in the southwestern section of the city near "Packingtown," is under the direction of the U.S. Housing Authority. Here, in an attractively landscaped area, units are provided for 354 families with maximum incomes of $25 a week and (with some exceptions) minimum incomes of $9.00 a week. Rent for the two-to-five-room modern apartments ranges from $13.25 to $17.50 per month. The 85 oblong red-brick buildings with flat roofs are nearly all one story in height; a few are two stories high. Begun early in 1936 and completed in 1937 as a WPA project with an appropriation of $2,000,000, the Will Rogers Courts were taken over in 1939 by the Housing Authority. Apartments are supplied with gas ranges, refrigerators, and shades; and the management maintains for the tenants a library, a kindergarten, "Toy-land," and other play facilities for children. There is an
active women's club. Donald Gordon was the architect, and the landscaping was done under the supervision of the city's park department. "A Guide to the Sooner State", 1941
This large 37-acre housing complex, as shown above was constructed by the WPA in the late 1930s as low-income housing. Though described above as having flat roofs, the buildings actually have shallow peak gabled roofs. There are triplexes, 4-plexes, 6-plexes and the buildings are one- and two-story. The buildings are constructed of brick veneer in a two-tone brick pattern, with concrete entry steps and porch and single windows, built on a concrete slab foundation. The area appears to be well kept and the apartments appear to be fully occupied. We noticed a few window A/C units, but in most cases, the apartments appear not to have air-conditioning.
This housing project is managed by the Oklahoma City Housing Authority. There are 354 units here which include efficiencies and 1-, 2- and 3-bedroom apartments. Rents range from $100 to $150 per month. Natural gas, water and refuse is included. The area has playgrounds, security lighting and patrol, laundry facilities, a community center and puts out a newsletter. In addition, no-charge services are provided to tenants, including Salvation Army Boys and Girls Club, a 4-H program, Girl Scouts, alcohol and drug counseling, a health club and scholarships. The buildings are directly north and west of the large Rotary Park, with playgrounds, tennis courts and ball fields.
