The North Theater was originally built around 160 AD, planned to be either a small performance space or a council chamber. Many of the seats in the lower rows are marked with signs used by the tribes with voting rights.
The upper rows were added later, around the 3rd Century, expanding seating capacity to 1600. Apparently it ceased to be used around the 5th Century.
Recently it has been submitted to restoration works and it was actually used as amphitheater: in 1997 the Palestinian poet Mahmoud Darwish offered here a reading to a full house.
