This waypoint is a few yards North of a large athletic field at the intersection of Ann Arbor Trail and Edward Hines Park Drive. I Google-Earthed it to get approximate position, fed the coordinates into my hand-held GPS and rode my bike to it. I had to pick my way through some natural woods, perhaps 100 yards. Then, I stood on the south bank of the Rouge, opposite where the creek enters it and obtained a photo and a new set of coordinates, which you see above.
The Rouge River system drains the area around Detroit and its western suburbs and empties into the Detroit River south of the city itself. Tonquish Creek is the tributary that drains Plymouth MI and environs. Further downstream from here the Rouge River provided the water that Henry Ford used to support his Rouge Plant. Begun in 1917, it was an experiment in bringing as many of the processes for making an automobile into one gigantic industrial development.
Before the advent of Europeans, the Rouge River System was used extensively by the native Algonquin (woodland) Indians as a source of drinking water and transportation.
