King Chulalongkorn (1853-1910), also known as King Rama 5 (reigned: 1868-1910), was one of the great kings of Thailand, and fondly remembered by his people. He is known for resisting the nefarious imperial ambitions of both Britain and France, modernising his Kingdom, and reforming the governmental administration. Statues of him are to be seen throughout Thailand, and near invariably at the entrance to provincial administration buildings (Provincial Halls).

The city of Udon Thani (Udon) is one of the larger in the Kingdom, and not too far from the border with Laos. At the city centre are the usual range of government buildings, filled with hard working civil servants managing the lives of the good citizens of this city and province. Outside the provincial hall is a statue of King Chula.

This statue differs from others of its type I have seen. It seems slightly smaller and not as well crafted. The only other example of such a design is outside the provincial hall of Phitsanulok province. The statue is life-sized, and depicts the king in a standard pose, his left hand on his sword, his right hand holding his famous pith helmet. The statue stands on a plinth, ~2m high, with a biographical plaque on its front facing side. The plinth rests on a dais in a grassed area before the hall. Interestingly, this hall was burnt in the 2010 "Red Shirt" protests, repair work is now underway.
