"The recently installed Aegis, by Lakewood Colorado artist Jon Stiles, is located on the lawn of the newly build District Three Police Station, on the Corner of University Blvd. and Iowa Street. Stiles' bold metal sculpture is a beacon to the community, reminding them of the sacrifices that police officers endure for the protection of the neighborhood. In is concept statement about his work Jon Stiles writes:
It is no secret that Police Officers dedicate their lives to the protection of their city. Every day Police Officers set out to do the things we citizens cannot. They, as well as other civil servants, are living heroes and heroines. My two sculptures celebrate them both in Life and in Death.
My first sculpture Aegis, is located outdoors in the courtyard. Aegis is designed to represent the protective “wing” officers provide over our city and to celebrate those whom paid the ultimate price protecting the innocent. It is a rising arc aiming skyward made of aluminum. The aluminum discs represent every Denver Officer that has been in the line of duty throughout our history. When the wind stirs, the discs begin to spin as if they are alive.
The actual arc mimics both the beauty of the architecture and the arc of an wing. The wing being the symbolic protection passed down through the millennia.
Aegis is a gateway, a causeway and a place of remembrance." (from (
