In Pack Square in the heart of downtown Asheville stands a tall obelisk, the memorial for Zebulon Vance, Governor of North Carolina in the Civil War. This is also called the "monument to tolerance".

Zebulon Baird Vance was a Confederate military officer in the American Civil War, the 37th and 43rd Governor of North Carolina, and U.S. Senator. An influential leader,he spoke and wrote movingly against what he called "the wickedness and the folly of intolerance." Vance became one of the most influential Southern leaders of the Civil War and postbellum periods.
