In 1882 the Gotthard tunnel opened and the line became a European transit route connecting Italy with the North of Switzerland and Germany.
Bellinzona is a stop of several Intercity connections between Zürich or Basel in the north and Lugano, Locarno or Milano (Italy).
In 2004 the combined commuter train network of Ticino, Switzerland and Lombardia, Italy (TILO) was founded. Bellinzona has been serving as one of the main hubs with the lines S10, S20 and S30.
