Thousands of Americans lost their lives crossing the perilous waters of the North Atlantic in World War II. About 670 people died when a German U-boat torpedoed the USAP Dorchester on Feb. 3, 1943. Four Chaplains-George L. Fox, Gilman, Vt., Methodist; Clark V. Poling, Schenectady, N.Y., Dutch Reformed; Alexander D. Goode, York, Jewish; and John P. Washington, Arlington, N.J., Catholic-were among the dead. The religious leaders relinquished their seats in lifeboats and removed their own life jackets to give to other men in uniform.
