In an area between Boston's Financial District, Chinatown, and the the 'Leather District' is One Lincoln Center, also known as the State Street Financial Center.
The building is located two blocks from the South Station transportation center, surrounded by Lincoln, Essex and Bedford Streets. It is in company with two other skyscrapers: One Financial Center and the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston. These buildings are a little isolated from the other buildings of the Financial District, which are mostly on a gentle hillside up to Beacon Hill.
At 503 ft (153 m) tall, it barely clears the minimum height. Below grade, it has a 900 car garage (I'm not sure how they fit it in with the depressed Central Artery nearby). The building facade is lined with granite, then glass near the top. The top part is stepped and topped with spires and metal 'gilding.' Also at the top is the following, "State Street" - marking the headquarters of State Street Bank. It cost $350 million to build.
This building is also known as the State Street Financial Center - but it should not be called the State Street Bank Building. This is given to a concrete and glass building on Franklin Street - the former home of State Street Bank.
Of the modern skyscrapers, this is my favorite for appearance. It is better than most in incorporating some detail work that is sets off from other buildings that are essentially glass boxes. As far as historical and iconic buildings, the Prudential Tower is still the building I look for in the skyline, but this is a nice addition to the skyline on the south side.
