Die reizvolle Landschaft des Landkreises Neumarkt wird hauptsächlich von den Schichten der obersten Trias (Keuper) und des Jura aufgebaut. In unserer Gegend ist eine vollständige Abfolge von den Sandsteinen des oberen Keupers über die Lias- und Doggergesteine bis zu den Kalk- und Dolomitschichten des Malms augeschlossen. Dazu kommen noch Albüberdeckung genannte Verwitterungslehme auf der Jurahochfläche, Flugsande aus der letzten Eiszeit, Fließerde- und Hangschuttbildungen, die Füllungen der Täler und die jungen Quellkalke.
Als die im Gebiet von Neumarkt verbreitete Schichtfolge in einem küstennahen Gebiet, in welchem ein ständiger Wechsel zwischen kontinentalen und marinen Bedingungen und schließlich ein flasches Schelfmeer bestand, zur Ablagerung kam, war die (heute unter diesen Sedimenten liegende) Kruste längst durch mehrere Gebirgsbildungen konsolidiert. Der Altmeister der Tektonik Hans Stille (1924) hat das Eo- und Paläo-Europa genannt.
Zur Zeit der Trias wurde Meso-Europa an den im Norden und Nordosten unseres Gebietes liegenden Nucleus angebaut, im wesentlichen durch Akkumulation von Beckensedimenten, die dann schließlich weiter im Süden, als Neo-Europa gebildet wurde, zu den Faltengebirgen des alpidischen Systems (als Folge eines Aufdriftens des afrikanischen Kontinents auf Europa) geformt wurden.

The charming landscape of the district Neumarkt is composed mainly of the upper strata of the Triassic (Keuper) and Jurassic.
