Taconite Harbor is located along the scenic North Shore Scenic Byway in northern Minnesota.
Taconite Harbor is well marked, has a scenic boat launch, rocks to climb, great view of the taconite processing plant and more. The roadway is nicely paved and leads down to a display of mining equipment, huge boulder of taconite and informative signs.
Follow the road down to the lakeshore, there is an awesome view of Lake Superior in all directions. The plant is a sight to see. Nice concrete launch and a safe harbor are found here.
On your way out, just before rejoining the byway pull over. You will see a couple of forlorn street lights, cracked pavement, trees that were planted decades ago. Taconite Harbor was once a company town that was dismantled in the 1980's and is now a virtual ghost town.
This is scenic, historic, educational and a fun place to stretch the legs.
