The Woodstock Festival had sold 100,000 advance tickets. However, since the event was held in a field, thousands just walked onto the grounds. The estimated amount of 400,000 is a conservative estimate. Some estimates (including the Woodstock website) are more than 500,000 attendees.
The Bethel, NY location was the farm of Max Yasgur. Some of the artists that performed include: Richie Havens, Joan Baez, Arlo Guthrie, Joe Cocker, Santana, Creedence Clearwater Revival, The Who, Greatful Dead, Janis Joplin, Jefferson Airplane, and Jimi Hendrix.
The area became extremely congested. Cars were parked along the sides of the roads and people walked 10 miles to get to the concert. The artists were unable to drive in to perform and were brought in by helicopter. Rolling Stone called the event one of the 50 events that changed Rock and Roll.
The site is now home to the Bethel Woods Center for the Arts. The Center is a museum for Woodstock, an Art Gallery and a concert venue. Most of the grounds are only accessible when the Center is open. The monument is available to the public without going into the Center.
