One of the most interesting headstone carvings in Mt. Hope Cemetery. The carving depicts a mourning scene or Memento Mori (Remember your mortality.) There are multiple symbolic images of death here. The mourner kneeling at the sarcophagus, the weeping willow tree, the angel carrying the scroll to the heavens (God's messenger taking a listing of the deceased life works for judgement.) Most interesting is the tree at the far right. On close inspection the fruit of this tree appears to be skulls.
