BUCKINGHAMSHIRE COUNTY COUNCIL

Information:
Archaeologists unearthed the remains of 19 Saxon settlers, at near Drayton Beauchamp whilst building the Aston Clinton bypass. One burial in particular contained the remains of a wealthy Saxon lady who was originally thought to be a Saxon Princess.

After the fall of the Roman Empire, Aston Clinton became a Saxon settlement. The remains of a Saxon cemetery, which included a burial of a mature woman thought to be a Saxon Princess was found during the construction of the Aston Clinton Bypass in 2001 in the parish of Drayton Beauchamp. The burial is thought to date back to around 650 AD. Drayton Beauchamp’s wealthy lady was originally thought to be a princess, but it soon became clear on comparison with discoveries made at Taplow, near Maidenhead, Buckinghamshire where a seventh century royal grave was excavated in 1883 by James Rutland that though magnificent, she was not royal. The lady of Drayton Beauchamp’s grave goods include gilded saucer brooches, a bead necklace and a toilet set.

The site is situated near to the Wendover Arm of Grand Union Canal, which joins Tring summit level of the Grand Union main line beside Marsworth top lock. Disused for over a century, the arm is in course of being restored by the Wendover Arm Trust. Remote and rural for almost all its length, the canal attracts much local wildlife.
