These two canoes are on display in Toronto's Royal Ontario Museum.

Displayed in Toronto's Royal Ontario Museum, one canoe is bracketed to the wall above the other. The placard accompanying the raised canoe informs us in part that it is a birchbark canoe and was an "essential mode of transportation among Native hunters and trappers in Canada... Constructed of wood gunwales, thwarts, ribs, and sheathing held within a birchbark cover, the canoe was made in a variety of styles to suit both lake and river travel."
The placard accompanying the lower canoe reads:
"Freight Canoe
Casar Newashish, Attikamek
Manouane, Quebec
Birchbark, wood, spruce root

Canoes of this size were used along the
larger river and lake routes. They were
paddled by a crew of eight to ten individuals
and carried up to four tons of total weight.
Only four full-sized freight canoes from the
1800s survived into the 20th century
and two have since been destroyed by
fire. This unique canoe pays homage to
the crucial role the freight canoe
played in Canada's economic, social and
political development."
