Meet "Leap" the jumping red rabbit.
Meet the red rabbit. This 56-foot-long aluminum sculpture by Denver artist Lawrence Argent is a centerpiece of the Sacramento airport’s new $1 billion terminal, which opened Oct. 6 (2011). According to the Associated Press, its looming presence has already inspired the nickname “the Hare-port.”
The rabbit – who is leaping into a granite suitcase on the baggage-claim floor – is one of 12 new public art pieces displayed in the terminal, at a combined cost of $6 million. He’s also a definite talking point for locals and visitors, whose reactions range from confused to inspired.

Lawrence Argent's "Leap" – the centerpiece sculpture at the Sacramento International Airport best known as the "Red Rabbit" – has garnered a national award.
The 56-foot-long aluminum sculpture, which cost $800,000, was part of a recent $1.27 billion airport expansion and spawned by the Sacramento Metropolitan Arts Commission's Art in Public Places program, which seeks to enliven public-funded architecture.

The aluminum rabbit is suspended by cables leaping into a granite suitcase below in the baggage claim area. “Leap” is the most well known of the pieces, as its monumental scale (56’L x 11’W x 24’H) and central location has caused many to playfully refer to the renovation as the “Hareport.” The artist intended the leaping rabbit to emulate the fast pace that people seem to move in the airport, as well as a way of bringing the green space around Terminal B inside.
