One of the most fun things when driving around small-town Oklahoma is to come upon a wall-sized mural where you least expect it. Agra's mural is one of these roadside delights. Painted on the south wall of a high red brick one-story commercial building, this mural depicts scenes from the history of Agra. It is located on the west side of Main Street (Highway 18).
Bob Palmer is a professional artist and teacher at the University of Central Oklahoma. He teaches mural painting and since the 1990s has used his students, both under-graduate and graduates, in a hands-on, in the field, mural painting experience. Be sure to check out his website shown below for photos and a description of his procedures. He has painted murals all over the state, and even in several foreign countries. His students are usually able to complete about five projects a semester. Palmer has a heart for small-town America and particularly enjoys creating these beauties in towns across the state. He has also painted murals for large churches, businesses, and the Oklahoma State Capitol.
This mural shows a scene on the east of a man with a bucket and a stack of barrels. Several children are standing and sitting on the fence. The center section shows the downtown street of Agra with the Bank of Agra on one side and a two-story Commercial Hotel on the other. On the west end, a railroad water tower shows (the M-K-T line used to go through Agra). An open wagon pulled by two horses is filled with a pioneer family.
The mural artists' names are shown in the lower left corner, however, a year is not shown. The signature reads: Palmer / Robert A. Wood / Lisa Quishenberry / muralsbypalmer.com
