This red brick building was constructed in 1900 replacing an earlier 1874 frame structure that was also used as a blacksmith shop. Set back some distance from the street, the original brick is visible on the front facade of the building.
The front of the building doesn't have the large windows normally associated with the commercial style building, rather there is a double door entrance and narrow windows at each side. The roof is corrugated iron and there are reminders of its long time use as a blacksmith shop, particularly, the stepped parapet and hand painted sign at the top of the front facade. Interior features include the original forge, ceiling fan, window grills and rings in the wall.
The large hand painted sign is also of historical significance, and even though it has been repainted over the years, it retains its original design. It was designed and painted by Ephraim Malm around the time the building was constructed in 1900. The sign reads "Holmberg and Johnson Blacksmith & Wagon Shop" and includes a shield with hammers, anvil and horseshoe. Malm later became famous for the stenciling process The Malm Brothers and Company developed.
