St Stephen's Basilica is the most important church in Hungary. It is named for St Stephan,(975 - 1038) the first king of Hungary and contains his relics including his incorruptable right hand. St Stephan's Basilica is large, the third largest church, the third highest building in Hungary. It is the tallest building in Budapest, equal in height (355 ft) to the nearby parliament buildings. Both are dominated by large domes.
The basilica opened in 1905 after 55 years of construction. The dome collapsed in 1868 requiring construction to start over again. This cetral dome dominates the church in many ways. Tourists can climb to the dome, walk around and go outside for a view of the city.
There is also a smaller dome over the altar also shown in the pictures.
The basilica is in active service as a Roman Catholic church and is an popular tourist site. It is also used for concerts. The choir and pipe organ are renowned.
