St Savior in Chora is off the normal tourist track in Istanbul but the mosaics preserved under plaster for 500 years are remarkable, well worth a visit. This was a country church outside the walls of old Constantinople but later incorporated within the expanded city walls. This church is perhaps the best example of a Byzantine church in Turkey, well decorated with mosaic images. When the Ottomans conquered the residual of the Roman Empire of Constantinople in 1458, this country church was converted to a mosque, Kariye Camii. The mosaics were covered with plaster and remained covered until Atiturk founded the Republic of Turkey and changed this mosque to a museum in the 1930's. Then the plaster was removed to expose these remarkable mosaics. The focus of this waymark is on the domes, the north dome in the inner narthex with the central image of Christ Panocrator. The south dome centered on Mary, Virgin and child with the surrounding images showing her genealogy in the House of David, and the side chapel dome, the parecclesion, again with the Virgin and child in the center of the dome.
