Un pont en bois est construit à cet endroit en 1847. Le pont en béton est construit en 1930 par Marius Dufresne. Il est reconstruit en 1962 puis élargi en 1993. Il est refait en acier à partir de 2010.
Le Pont Viau est un pont en arc en béton et en acier, comptant deux voies dans chaque direction, deux trottoirs de chaque côté et une piste cyclable. Longueur totale : 475,28 m; largeur : 20,27 m ; 5 arches reposant sur 4 piliers et 2 culées.
Chaque jour de la semaine, environ 29 000 véhicules motorisés ainsi que 7 000 piétons et cyclistes le traversent.
