This the third church building of the parish on this site, and by far the largest. The architect was Joseph Marshal from Topeka, who had designed other Catholic buildings. Built in the Romanesque Revival style of course faced native limestone, the towering spire of St. Joseph's dominates that area of town.
Construction began on the third of June, 1901, but the summer heat caused the cornerstone laying to be put off until November 28. Some three years after construction had begun, on June 12, 1904 construction was completed and the church was dedicated. It took over 42 years to free the church from debt, but on May 30, 1944 the Church was finally consecrated. The cornerstone can be seen in the left front corner of the building with the consecration stone place immediately above it.
