There are some who might wonder why indeed a giant chicken is gazing out over the streets of the fine northern Thai city of Phitsanulok. The answer to this not entirely unreasonable question is that chickens were the childhood companion of a lonely Thai boy, held as hostage by the King of Burma. This boy was to return to his childhood home of Phitsanulok, and, in the fullness of time, throw off the yoke of Burmese repression and launch a decade long campaign to free the northern Thai states from Burmese rule.

Thus the humble chicken became a symbol of the King, King Naresuan by name: born 1555, reigned 1590, died 1605. There is also a story that when a hostage he had a cock fight with the King or the son of the King of Burma, and the future Thai King won, thus indicating that was destined to win freedom for his people.

The chicken is located on the road, near the centre of the city, close to a former fort of the King. Easy to spot. I estimate 5m tall. Chicken statues are a common sight in the central north area of Thailand, where King Naresuan once ruled, though this is the largest I have seen.
