The Naval Establishments were established as a defensive post for the war of 1812. There was concern that the Americans would attack from the north. In 1836 this church was built as the religious support for the establishments and has been in active use as an Anglican church ever since.
It is called on-the-lines because it was built on the "lines of communication" between the town and the naval station. This same road was also the supply lines road that ran from Barrie in the south to the establishments and in effect connected Penetanguishene to the captial of Upper Canada, York (now Toronto).
Many of the founders and prominent members of the community are buried in the church yard. Unfortunately the church is not open to the public except for Sunday service.
