A Viking Heritage in Venice

In the 11th century Vikings carved runic inscriptions on this marble lion. At that time it was placed in Piraeus, near Athens in Greece. In 1687 the lion was looted by the Venetians and placed at the Arsenale.
The runes are still visible today.
