"Die Kirche auf dem Kalvarienberg ist der Schmerzhaften Muttergottes geweiht. Mit ihrem Bau wurde 1664 begonnen, am 24. Oktober 1665 wurde sie eingeweiht.
Vermutungen, es habe sich auf dem Hügel zumindest ein Vorgängerbau - sei es eine Kirche, sei es eine befestigte Anlage - liegen zwar wegen der herausragenden Position der Kirche nahe, sind aber bisher nicht bestätigt worden: nach allem, was bisher festzustellen war, ist diese Kirche der erste und einzige Bau auf dem Kalvarienberg.

Es handelt sich im Kern um einen achteckigen Zentralbau mit westlich angebautem Chor. An diesen Kernbau sind im Osten und Westen je ein Raum angebaut: im Osten eine später hinzugefügte Vorhalle, die als Eingangsraum dient und die Fastenkrippe sowie das "Grab Christi" beherbergt, im Westen eine gleichzeitig mit dem Kernbau entstandene Sakristei.
