This sculpture invites the viewer to participate in a great moment in Canadian history. It is late October, 1929. After a long legal battle, the news has finally arrived that women have been declared "persons" under the law (Persons case). Nellie McClung and Irene Parlby have just come inside with a newspaper bearing the headline. McClung holds up the newspaper for the others to see, while Parlby points at it.
The other three women have been having tea, which was often the setting for their political discussions. Henrietta Muir Edwards raises her teacup in a toast, while Louise McKinney clasps her hands together in excitement. Emily Murphy has risen from her chair, and gestures to the onlooker to join the happy group by taking her seat.
This is the first of two monuments to the Famous Five. The other one, on Parliament Hill in Ottawa, has the same components but arranged slightly differently.
