In 1799 the Potter Family owned a fulling mill. In 1813 William Potter took on his son-in-law Peleg Walker as a partner. It was Pelegs duty to act as the night guard and at the break of dawn ring the bell that brought all the workers to their daily duties. One evening Wiliam and Peleg got into a disagreement and William had stated that one day they would have to remove the keys to the mill from the pocket of a dead man.

On one morning in May of 1822 the bell failed to ring and when the workers entered the mill they found Peleg hanging from the bell rope, the keys hanging from his pocket. That night the bell began to ring at midnight when the mill was checked no one was found. This happened for a few nights before they removed the bell completely. However at midnight the next night the workers awoke to the sound of the mill running. When they arrived at the mill they were shocked to find it running in full operation completely by itself. The workers left out of fear and soon after the mill closed for good. In the 1880's the Factory burned to the ground, however the foundation still stands.

In 1885 the state even acknowledged the place being haunted by listing it in the 1885 State Census.
