Das Denkmal steht auf dem Naschmarkt vor der Alten Börse, unweit von Auerbachs Keller. Goethe besuchte Auerbachs Keller während seines Studiums in Leipzig 1765-1768 oft und nannte ihn seine Lieblingsweinstube. In Faust I hat er diesem ein literarisches Denkmal gesetzt.
Das 2,65 m hohe Bronzestandbild zeigt Goethe als Studenten. Es wurde vom Leipziger Bildhauer Carl Ludwig Seffner entworfen, bei Noack & Brückner gegossen und am 28. Juni 1903 enthüllt. Der 2,50 m hohe Sockel aus rotem Meißner Granit wurde nach einem Entwurf des Architekten Max Bischoff ausgeführt.
Eine ovale Tafel an der Vorderseite des Sockels enthält die Inschrift:

The monument stands at the Naschmarkt in front of the Old Stock Exchange, near Auerbach's Keller. Goethe frequented Auerbach's Keller often while studying in Leipzig 1765-1768, and called it his favourite tavern. In Faust I he has set that a literary monument.
The 2.65 m tall bronze statue shows Goethe as a student. It was designed by the Leipzig sculptor Carl Ludwig Seffner, cast at Noack & Brückner and unveiled on 28 June 1903. The 2.50 m high pedestal of Meißen red granite was executed after a design by architect Max Bischoff. An oval plaque on the front of the base contains the inscription:
