The fountain was built in 1935 during "Bucharest Days" - an event initiated by king Carol the Second, which included many city beatufication projects.
The fountain was designed by architect Octav Doicescu, and the mosaics at the bowl were made by Mac Constantinescu, Dorin Pavel and August Schmeidegen. The mosaics represent the figures of the zodiac - this is where the fountain got its name from.
