There have been churches on this site since the early 12th century. In around 1500 the church was pulled down and rebuilt with a tower, nave, chancel and North aisle. This church, in turn, was pulled down, with the exception of the tower, in 1796. A new church was built in its place in a style known as “Churchwarden Gothic”. Some attempt to improve the architecture was made by Anthony Salvin between 1841 and 1843.

The tower is made from limestone rubble, with the nave and chancel of coursed rubble with a grey slate roof. The tower is of two stages with diagonal buttresses and embattled parapet and corner finials. The main body of the church also has buttresses.
