Set in the late 1940s this film depicts a northern cycling club. All should be simple, but the club gets involved in a love triangle, a bike stealing gang and a member who is a deserting soldier, who is discovered just before an important race.

The film starts when the club, out training, are cut up by rich boy David Howarth in his car. There is an exchange of views between Howarth and Susie Bates. Howarth falls for Susie and tries to pursue her by buying a bike and joining the club. This generates some friction between Howarth and Susie’s boyfriend, Sam Walters.

The son of one of the club's members has got involved with two illegal bookmakers who are putting the squeeze on him. In order to pay off his debts the lad gets involved in stealing members' bikes. He gets rumbled by Howarth however and gets chased by the club all over the limestone pavement of Malham before, in desperation, he throws the bike over the edge.

Despite Sam’s objections Howarth continues to practice with the club and becomes quite good. On the day of the big race the club’s star cyclist gets arrested for being a deserter from the army. Howarth steps in and wins the race for the club. Despite this Susie still only has eyes for Sam. In a generous act Howarth gives up on Susie, but does help the couple find a house so that they can get married.
