William J Holloway
Eighth Governor of Oklahoma

(text on flat headstone)

William J. Holloway (signature)
1888 - 1970
Description:
(source: wikipedia) William J. Holloway was born and raised in Arkansas, earning first a degree in education in Arkansas followed by more education in Chicago. After moving his family to Hugo, OK (southeast corner of the state), he became a high school principal, left to earn a law degree, then returned to Hugo to practice law. It was at this point that William's career in politics began. He won an election to become the county attorney for Choctaw County, served in the Oklahoma Senate, and won the election for Lt. Governor when that position was vacated by Martin Trapp who became Governor when John C. Walton was removed from office. Holloway became the Governor of Oklahoma when Governor Johnston was impeached from office. This made Holloway the second Lt. Governor in Oklahoma history to become Governor following impeachment. During his service as Governor, Holloway implemented a 45 mph speed limit, changed the state election laws (instituting the runoff primary), and led Oklahomans thru a Depression. After serving in politics Holloway practiced law in OKC until his death in 1970.
