"According to Cinema Treasures, the Paramount opened in 1930, had a single screen and seated 1231." Source
The marquee is starting to sag, the only letters hung on it being the words, THEATER FOR SALE, below which is a phone number. Still the bright blue light bulbs that form the "Paramount" gives a hint of what once was. It is apparent that there is some activity going on in downtown Marshall, and hopefully the Paramount can be saved.
Another interesting fact of history that pertains to the unwitting role the Paramount played in the Civil Rights struggles of the 1960's. "James Farmer, Jr. co-founded the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE) in 1942. As the national organization's chairman, he was a leader in the nonviolent civil disobedience movement of the 1960's and organizer of the Freedom Rides in the South. In 1998, he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Honor by President Bill Clinton. One of Farmer's early motivations for founding CORE was Marshall's segregated Paramount Theater, with its offending side entrance for African Americans leading to the balcony." Source
