Sunray and Meridian are neighboring unincorporated towns located on Old US 81 between Duncan and Comanche, Oklahoma. Sunray is named after the large refinery which used to call it home. Both towns are now part of the Comanche Independent School District.
This mural is located on the side of one of the buildings located on the site of the old Meridian Elementary School. The school's teams were known as the Rockets; hence, the theme of the mural. Now, the schools is home to FAME Academy, the alternative education program for grades 6-12 of the Comanche Schools.
FAME's approach to reintegrating students seems to be based on an arts-centered approach. During the 2011-2012 school year, the arts program centered on pottery and mosaics. In a previous school year, it had obviously focused on mural painting. Besides this mural, the large Chisholm Trail Mural (waymark WMEQTV) is also located on the school grounds. A close examination of both works indicates that, while they are both very good, they were, nonetheless, painted by students.
Since you don't want to go on school grounds when school is in session, slow way down while driving down the highway in front of the school. This mural is on the building just to the south of the main school building and faces the main building. It is approximately 18-ft. wide by 12-15-ft. tall.
This mural is rather simple. The left half depicts a rocket taking off from Earth with words "Meridian Rockets" overhead. The right side of the mural depicts a road leading up to the square-ish looking main school building with a big "FAME" banner draped over it. Fourth-of-July type rockets are shooting up and exploding over the building.
