Thomas Gilbert White painted two murals for the Kentucky state capitol building. Both depict events in the life of Daniel Boone. They are located in decorative lunettes above the east and west staircases which lead to the House and Senate chambers respectively. The one depicted on the stamp is the one on the east side. It shows Daniel Boone and three members of his party seeing the rolling hills of the Kentucky bluegrass region from an "eminence" that they had climbed. This "eminence" is believed to be Pilot Knob in Powell County.
Kentucky became a state in 1792. The stamp commemorates the 150th anniversary of Kentucky's statehood.
