It would seem the local historical society has chosen this exact area to place anything old and historic. The millstone, in its own display, is raised off the ground and has a placard/marker attached to the brick wall explaining its significance. The stone is in front of and to the right of the Shinn-Curtis Log House (1712). The millstone and house have nothing in common except for their advanced relative age to the rest of the surrounding structures. The stone was part of a grist mill. A gristmill or grist mill is a building in which grain is ground into flour, or the grinding mechanism itself. The historical marker reads:
Grist Mill Stone
This Mill Stone was recovered form the site of
the historic industrial park at the corner of
Mill and Pine street. Built in 1796 by Cox &
Davidson and operated with five French
Burrs until destroyed by fire in 1910. This
Mill Stone is the only true tangible artifact
ever recovered from the site of the historic
Grist Mill.
