Phayao province is one of the older Thai settlements in what is now the modern Kingdom of Thailand. Attached to the premier Buddhist wat of the province, Wat Sri Kom Kam, is a small museum. This is essentially the museum of the province.

The museum presents the cultural and political history of the region, largely focusing on the earlier Lanna Kingdom (~13th-18th century). The contents include a sizeable number of artefacts from these times, supplemented with diorama, and lots of information signs. Virtually no recent material.

The museum was founded as a national museum in 1996. The contents principally come from the Wat's collection of artefacts accumulated over its history. Entry is an inexpensive 40 baht (for foreigners).

At the entry to the Museum is an attractive piece of artwork, a set of naga (serpent spirits), which are a symbol of the province and city. Attached to these serpents are two bells, one large and one small. The larger lots to be an ancient bell, looking a little worn and used, while the smaller looks new. As with most bells in Thailand
