"The fist Schmeckfest took place in 1959. The one-evening event was hosted by the Freeman Junior College and Academy Women's Auxiliary in commemoration of its 10th anniversary. The meal included a variety of traditional foods from the three ethnic groups that comprised the Auxiliary - the Hutters, Schweitzers and Low Germans.
Since that initial "festival of tasting" in 1959, Schmeckfest has grown steadily, adding demonstrations, presentations, displays and a musical production. In response to increasing demand for Friday and Saturday tickets, Schmeckfest is now held on two consecutive weekends." (quoted from the 2012 Schmeckfest brochure)
