On the Central Line the preceding station is Bethnal Green and the following station is Stratford. On the District Line and Hammersmith & City Lines the preceding station is Stepney Green and the following station is Bow Road.

The station opened in 1902 by the Whitechapel and Bow Railway and its name is taken from the area and the Mile End Road that passes the entrance. The area is named Mile End after a milestone that used to exist here at a distance of one mile from the City of London.
