Lloyd Waner was born in Harrah, Oklahoma, in 1906. He and his older brother grew up working on their family's farm, which involved very long work days for the two boys. Baseball was an activity they both enjoyed, and their father (who played minor league) encouraged his sons' natural talent. After graduating from high school, Lloyd attended college briefly at East Central State University before beginning his career in baseball.
After playing ball elsewhere, he broke into the Majors with the Pirates, at the urging of his brother who was already a star player. Lloyd set an MLB rookie record, and participated in one World Series. Although he started and finished his career in Pittsburgh, he had also played for the Boston Braves, Cincinnati Reds, Philadelphia Phillies, and the Brooklyn Dodgers. Lloyd's big brother was known as "Big Poison", and they played together for 13 years, one at center field and one at right field.
Lloyd Waner was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1967.
