This is a bit convoluted, because there's Cross Creek (a stream of water) and Cross Creek (a village by the same name), but here goes:
In 1762 the village of Campbellton was established at Cross Creek with provisions for the public buildings. It was the county seat of Cumberland County. In 1778 the village of Cross Creek and Campbellton were merged and the courthouse was ordered to be erected in that part of the town known as Cross Creek. In 1783 Campbellton was changed to Fayetteville in honor of Lafayette (Revolutionary War Hero, General Lafayette).
