The South Meetinghouse also known as the South Ward Room was built 1866 in an Italianate style. The building replaced the South Church which was built on the site in 1731. The current building was originally used as a school on the first floor and second floor was a ward room for various public functions. From the beginning the building has been used by various churches as their meeting place when they did not have a building of their own. The building continued to be used as a school until about 1915. The building was used for various functions over the years. To save the building from demolition the Strawbery Banke Museum signed a long term lease on the building in 1966. The building served as the Portsmouth Children Museum from 1982 to 2008. The building is currently used by the Portsmouth Public Media, a non-profit public access television station.
