Construction began in 1907 with a $17,500 Carnegie Grant and this building was designed in the Classical Revival style by local architect Bert D. Keck. The builder was Charles Ross and the library opened in 1908 and used as a library until 1984. The new library opened right next door and this building was purchased by the Polk County Historical Society to house their archives.

In 1984, the Carnegie Public Library was added to the National Register of Historic Places. (visit link)
