The construction of a lighthouse to replace an 8 meter high light where the Warnow River joins the Baltic Sea was first approved in 1863. Financial and political disagreements postponed the start of construction until 1897. The lighthouse, designed by Friedrich Kerner, was completed the following year and commissioned in October 1898.

The lighthouse is constructed of glazed white brick with bands of green brick. The tapered round tower is 31 meters high. A rotating Fresnel lens is operated electrically. The characteristic flash pattern is: 0.3 seconds flash, 2.7 seconds dark, 0.3 seconds flash, 2.7 seconds dark, 0.3 seconds flash, 8.7 seconds dark, 0.3 seconds flash, 8.7 seconds dark. The sequence takes 24 seconds and then repeats.

The stamp was issue by Germany in 2008 on the 110th anniversary of the construction of the lighthouse.
