EN: "Sommercasino" is a former meeting house of the 19th century that has been converted to a youth center.

It was built in 1822 by a private association outside the city walls as a meeting house for the local bourgeoisie, especially the ones who retreated to their country estates in the surroundings for summer. Around the same time a city casino was established in the city center. During the riots before the secession of the two parts of the canton Basel in the early 1830s the Sommercasino association moved to the city casino. While the city casino florished the Sommercasino ran up depts more and more. In 1907 the two assiotiations merged but still could not overcome the Sommercasino depts, so that the building and the associated park had to be sold in 1937.

In 1959 it was converted into Switzerland's first youth center. Since 1986 the center is run by the non-profit association "Basler Freizeitaktion" (BFA).
