Tillman Cemetery is a small area with about 200 burials, and is a black cemetery located on the north side of Route 66, 1-1/2 miles east of Luther Road.
Mattie Smith's headstone is a flat gray double marker with flowers engraved in the corners, and an engraved Banner showing the surname SMITH. Her husband passed away in 1929 at the age of 59.
Mattie's inscription reads: MATTIE A. / Sept. 23, 1877 / Mar. 18, 1978.
** Mattie was born the year of Edison's first sound recording.
** When she was five, the first false teeth were patented.
** Ann Sullivan began teaching 6 yr. old blind-deaf Helen Keller when Mattie was ten.
** The year Mattie turned 20, the N.Y. Sun ran its famous editorial "Yes Virginia, there is a Santa Claus."
** George Burns married Gracie Allen the year Mattie was 49.
** The U.S. began nuclear tests at the Nevada test site when Mattie was 74.
** The year Mattie passed away, the first ultrasound exam was performed, and in vitro fertilization began. Garfield the Cat also made his debut.
