El Reno is a mural haven and also a haven for Route 66 afficionados, so Team Blakelylaw was shocked to see that this spot has never been posted in any waymark category.
The building's address is 221 S. Bickford in El Reno, but the mural faces E. Wade, also known as historic Route 66 in this part of El Reno. The mural is therefore wonderful historical triptych of both the building's history and the history of the road before it.
At one end is an old Model something from 1903. At the other, is a Mustang from the 1960s. In between, are representations of a 1930s-era streetlamp and a modern stoplight.
The mural contains a large thank-you postcard, representing the building's current occupant, the Russell-Murray Hospice. The postmark, as well as another panel of the mural, indicate the hospice moved in in 1988. Other panels are dedicated to other occupants of the building over the years - the Sam Peach Grocery in 1903, Ray's Used Furniture in 1958, and Stephen's Time Shop in 1969. Note the awnings on the building's side and the ones in the grocery store panel; they appear to be the same! There is also a panel depicting a 1930 parade, but its meaning is lost on Team Blakelylaw.
The mural was painted in by Chris Small in 2006 and is in marvelous condition. There is no wear and tear on it at all that we could see.
