1855 wurden im Gebiet um Papenburg 402 Lutheraner und 88 Reformierte gezählt. Zu den Gottesdiensten gingen sie nach Völlen, ins benachbarte Ostfriesland. Lutherische und reformierte Christen
errichteten 1869 die "Evangelische Kirche am Hauptkanal", die im neu-gotischen Stil von Landesbaumeister Wellenkamp (Osnabrück) entworfene Kirche wurde nach nur 18 Monaten Bauzeit am 23.
Februar 1870 eingeweiht. Der Turm hat eine Höhe von 39 Metern. Bis zur Jahrhundertwende wurde die Kirche mit einer 11-Register-Orgel, einer Turmuhr, einer erweiterten Empore und farbigen
Fenstern im Chorraum ausgestattet.
Im Gotteshaus wechselten sich jeden Sonntag lutherische und reformierte Gottesdienste ab. Nach 100 gemeinsamen Jahren wurde eine eigene reformierte Kirche errichtet, die "Evangelische Kirche
am Hauptkanal" wird 1980 in "Nikolaikirche" umbenannt.
1855, the area around Papenburg counted 402 Lutherans and 88 Reformed. For the worship they went to Völlen, in the neighbouring East Frisia. Lutheran and Reformed Christians erected in 1869 the "Evangelische Kirche am Hauptkanal", the architect of the country Wellenkamp (Osnabrück), designed the neo-Gothic church, it was Inaugurated 18 months after at February 23rd, 1870. The tower has a height of 39 meters. Until the turn of the century the church was equipped with a 11-register organ, a church clock, an expanded gallery and stained-glass windows were fitted in the choir room.
The church took turns every Sunday at Lutheran and Reformed worship. After 100 years together, an own Reformed Church was built, the "Evangelische Kirche am Hauptkanal" was renamed in 1980 in "Nikolaikirche".
