Laura E. McCoy is buried at Jones I.O.O.F. Cemetery, at the northeast corner of Wilshire and Hiwassee Road near Jones. This is a very nice, well-maintained cemetery with approximately 2100 burials.
Laura McCoy's headstone is a double one with her husband George. It is a standing red granite marker. Laura was born on July 29, 1899 and died on November 10, 1999.
- She was 4 years old when the Wizard of Oz movie came out, but she probably never saw it as a child, in rural Oklahoma.
- She was a new teen-ager of 13 when Jim Thorpe from nearby Prague won his medals at the Olympics.
- The Girl Scouts was established when Laura was 16 and she might have joined that organization.
- Laura was 23 years old when sharpshooter Annie Oakley shot 100 clay targets for a new record.
- She was a middle-aged woman when the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor in 1941.
- In 1959, the first Barbie doll went on sale and perhaps Laura bought one for a grandchild.
- She was 77 yrs. old when our nation celebrated its Bicentennial in 1976.
- The Mars Polar Lander was launched the year Laura died - just imagine all she saw in her lifetime.
